Provide strategic insight and tactical quality improvement research for the next generation of Microsoft Support.

This position will drive our research efforts to meet the support needs of customers across three fronts:
    1.      Evaluate high-level scenario-based value propositions. You'll work with a global network of data sources to identify customer acceptance of the scenarios that prioritize our 3-year planning and resource allocation. What aspects of the scenarios resonate with customers? What aspects don't? Are there regional differences? How do we restructure the scenarios to meet the likely customer resistance points? How do our customers prioritize our proposed scenarios? Are we addressing the most pressing customer needs?

    2.      Conduct qualitative behavior studies, both locally and online. You'll conduct Scenario Workflow Reviews with internal stakeholders then test the user experience in the lab.  What kind of issues did the review miss? How do the stakeholders need to change their understanding of customers to reduce design flaws on future projects? What problems did customers have? What are your recommendations for addressing them?

    3.      Combine live site BI metrics with qualitative study findings to generate an evolving understanding of our customers. You'll work with the UX BI team to develop Insight Reports.  Your role will be to interpret data packaged by the BI team – Is the live site working for our customers? Are features being used or are they clutter? Are customers dropping out of key workflows? The Insight Reports capture the cumulative understanding of how customers use our live sites and how they respond to our TO-BE designs in the lab.

Activities & Deliverables This position will take the lead for research on the online support experience targeting one of three Audience segments: Business, Consumer, or Microsoft Partners. Researcher tasks and deliverables could include any or all of the following as required by project needs.

    Usability Researcher (intermediate- to senior-level)

    Location:  Redmond, WA

Contract Length:  4 months to start, possible to extend

    JOB DESCRIPTION:
This Team builds real-time communication and collaboration solutions that span client, server, and internet-class services.
This position will support the collaboration and online meetings offering of the product.
The position will report to a UX Researcher. The role requires very tight integration with the Design, PM and UR teams. The job is primarily focused on research activities and the candidate must have the necessary skills and experience to work independently.

Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
    • Planning, scoping and conducting iterative usability assessments of the upcoming release of the product, as it moves from concepts to the final design.
    • The assessments can use a variety of methods such as focus groups, formative usability lab studies, site visits, benchmark studies, online surveys and polls, etc. depending on study requirements, time and resources.
    • In total, the candidate can be expected to run up to 2 studies per month, including at least one 1 intense full-size study such as a benchmark or field study.
    • Analyzing data, preparing solid reports and presenting results to the product team.
    • Depending on the specific requirements, the candidate can be asked to produce various deliverables, including reports, presentations, video clips, story boards, etc.
    • Working with the Design, PM, Development, and Test teams to influence product decision-making and integrate insights of the user studies into product specifications.

The candidate MUST satisfy all the requirements below
    • Advanced degree or industry experience in Human-Computer Interaction, Behavioral Science, Design or related disciplines
    • Established experience in software or hardware development industry as a User Researcher, UX specialist or similar;

    • Be organized, self-driven and able to work under tight deadlines and changing requirements.

    Additional Notes from the manager:

Mainly qualitative research.  Classic usability role, a lot of qualitative research, time in the lab, time with the team to figure what needs to be researched, some quantitative and different types of research.  Maybe some surveys, some visits to customers (less so), the product needs a bit of infrastructure in order to test so they usually use internal employees as participants.  The position will offer a variety of research in order to keep the researcher interested.

2-3 weeks study process usually.  The manager doesn’t like the researchers to write huge / long reports, he prefers shorter / concise reports.

If you are interested in this role, please send your resume or email to Tyrel Lucke (tyrel.lucke@compucom.com) at CompuCom.  Thank you.
